Give Beyond Your Lifetime

Good stewardship of the resources God has given us extends beyond our lifetime to those who come after us. Legacy for Ministry has been designed to help you think clearly and plan prayerfully about the legacy you will leave behind through your will and estate.

Finish strong

Finish strong

You can make a significant charitable gift to an organization you believe in—beyond what may have been possible during your lifetime.
Flexible and revocable

Flexible and revocable

Your charitable gift can be designated for any amount and is revocable at any time if your situation changes. There are many ways to be generous, and they don’t necessarily require cash.
Reduce tax

Choosing the right gift can save a lot of tax on your estate. Check our Planned Giving section for more details.

Legacy for Ministry is a stewardship education program jointly sponsored by Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ), Baptist Women, and Canadian Baptist Ministries.

Our Will and Estate Planning Workshops are offered through the local churches and ministries of the CBOQ at no cost to the participants or sponsoring organization. These Workshops address stewardship issues including legal documents such as wills, the appointment of guardians, Power of Attorney for Property and for Personal Care. They also discuss how to order your affairs for a smooth transition to the next generation, including tax considerations and charitable gifts. Workshops are available in English, Cantonese and Mandarin.

In Ontario and Quebec, Legacy for Ministry is coordinated by Diane McBeth. She works closely with George and Nancy Bell and John Szeto, volunteer presenters of Legacy for Ministry workshops.

56% of Canadians don’t have valid wills
Recently Legacy for Ministry came to our church for a workshop. I thought I would know most of the information already, but learned many new things. And what I learned is impacting the way I minister to others, particularly the counsel I give to couples preparing for marriage.
Judy Shierman, Farmer Memorial Baptist Church
Chinese seniors do not like to talk about wills. It is very difficult for them. There is also lack of knowledge of the importance to have a will. They often think their estate will work itself out, and be divided automatically to the children, but do not realize you have to state that in paper. How I wish they could attend one these seminars and learn the practical steps they have to do in Canada to put their estate in order!

Diane made a Legacy for Ministry presentation at our church. We had a lawyer in attendance, and after Diane was finished, he stood up to speak, but was almost speechless because the material had been so well presented. His words to Diane were, "You could come and teach our young lawyers."
Brian Affleck, Carleton Place Baptist Church

May we hold a Legacy workshop at your church?

Group-PS522

  • It’s free
  • We’ll make it easy
  • It will help your people get the financial and legal protection they need
  • It will help your church’s finances
  • Available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese

Some people would leave you a bequest if they only knew how.

Egerton Street Baptist Church in London is in the process of transforming our old building into a modern and accessible place of worship. Without the two estate gifts that we have received this would not have been possible. I am thankful that those church members remembered their church in their wills – and we give God thanks!

Frequently Asked Questions
  • Who sponsors this program?

Legacy for Ministry is a stewardship education program of Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, Canadian Baptist Ministries, and Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec.
  • How much does it cost?

Legacy workshops are free to CBOQ churches and their guests. We will not sell or promote any products.
  • Will it divert funding from our local church?

No. Among seminar participants who have indicated an intention to leave a bequest, 3 out of 4 choose their local church over any other charity.
  • What does Legacy for Ministry provide?

We will send you promotional materials including posters, bulletin inserts, and a PowerPoint ‘infomercial'. We also arrange for a local lawyer to be present to answer questions on the day of the workshop. On the day of the presentation we will bring the projector, computer and all other materials.
  • What is the church’s responsibility?

Please promote the workshop ahead of time. Then give us a room and turn on the coffee pot.
  • When should we have it?

Workshops can be held after church, on Sunday evening, as Sunday School electives or on weekdays in the daytime or evening.

If you’ve decided to leave a planned gift, this section will help with some of the technical information you or your lawyer will need to make your decision official.

Step 1: Obtain CRA Number

Confirm your chosen organization has a Charitable Registration Number. If they don’t have a CRA number, you can still leave them a gift, but your estate will not receive a tax receipt to offset other deemed income.

For example:

Organization CRA Number
Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec (CBOQ) 118799071RR0001
Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM) 106843436RR0001
Canadian Baptist Women of Ontario and Quebec (CBWOQ) 119215044RR0001

If the organization you would like to benefit is not listed here, you can check the CRA website. Type the name of the organization in the search box to look up their charitable registration number.

Step 2: Obtain Name and Address

Confirm the exact legal name of the organization and its address.

For example:

Acronym Legal Name and Address
CBOQ Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec
100-304 The East Mall
Etobicoke, ON M9B 6E2
CBM Canadian Baptist Ministries
7185 Millcreek Drive
Mississauga, ON L5N 5R4
CBWOQ The Baptist Women’s Missionary Society of Ontario and Quebec
100-304 The East Mall
Etobicoke, ON M9B 6E2

Step 3: Consider Your Options

Think about how to make your gift. If at all possible, talk to a financial advisor. Different types of gifts have different tax implications.

How to Make a Bequest
How to Give Life Insurance, RRSPs or RRIFs
How to Give Listed Shares (Stocks, Bonds, Mutual Funds)

"If you have tithed during your lifetime,

consider tithing on your death. It makes an incredible statement to your children and heirs, and will benefit the churches and organizations you love." - Eric Campbell, Central Baptist Church, Sarnia
